Developing functional websites with a great user experience is not the ultimate goal of web pages and the role they play. We will explore how and why semantic HTML is beneficial for enhancing accessibility.

What is accesibility ?

Web accessibility is the practice of making web pages usable and accessible to all people, regardless of their abilities, disabilities, or preferences. Web accessibility is beneficial to everyone, from people with impairments and special needs, to people who use different devices, browsers, languages or network conditions.

How do semantic HTML tags improve accessibility?

Semantic HTML improves web accessibility by providing clear and consistent information about the structure and content of a web page. In web development when writing semantic HTML code, it is important to choose the most appropriate and specific tag for each element based on its role.

Semantic HTML elements and their roles:

  • Headings with the tag (<h1> to <h6> should be used to create a clear and logical outline of the web page with only one <h1> per page.
  • List ordered or unordered <ul> / <ol> are great for grouping related items such as (<table> <th> <tr>) should soley be used for tabular data.
  • Figure <figure><figcaption> can be used for wrapping images, diagrams, charts, or other content that has a caption or explanation.
  • To mark quotations and their sources, use <blockqoute> and <cite>
  • Nav <nav> tag is used to define a section of navigation links

Semantic HTML, with tags like `<header>` and `<button>`, enhances user experience for individuals with disabilities and those using assistive technologies. These tags, along with attributes like id, class, lang, alt, provide crucial context, aiding browsers and assistive tools in accurately interpreting and presenting web content. This emphasis on semantic HTML ensures improved accessibility and inclusivity, making websites more user-friendly for everyone.
